After moving to Cliffside Park I was on a savage hunt for some good, authentic Chinese food. New Jersey seems to come up short nearly every time in this category, and my former home of North Bergen was no exception. Having spent quite a bit of time in Flushing, Queens one tends to become spoiled quite quickly. I can say I was extremely pleased to find the Petite Soo Chow Chinese Restaurant.

The Grub:

This is hands down the most authentic Chinese food I have found in New Jersey - most everything else boils down to the Americanized Chinese food we all grew up eating. Petite serves up classics like scallion pancakes, fried rice cakes, Chow Fun and Chow Mein. I really encourage everyone to try their Pork Soup Dumplings - little steamed dumplings full of magical, flavorful pork soup and filling which, in my opinion are insanely good. Damn near close too, or exceeding anything I could find in Flushing or Chinatown. While a number of their noodle dishes are extremely good, my two favorites have to be the Shanghai Style Scallion Noodle (spaghetti-gauge noodles in a sweet and salty sauce) and Pan Fried Noodle (self explanatory). Also, while it seems an Americanized order, the Pork Fried Rice is simple and amazing - way better than I was used to. Petite offers a wide variety of seafood, and also offers a breakfast menu which, I don't think I've ever seen at a Chinese restaurant. It's also worth noting that these guys were just named the best Chinese place in NJ, so do yourself a favor and don't skip it.

The Digs:


A no frills traditional Chinese place if ever I've seen one. Plain decor, plain tables and plain carpet. You wont care though as it is all about the food here. Every order comes with some tea and peanuts to start which is nice. Service is good but don't expect a lot in the way of communication with your server, depending on who you get. Also, if you have a food allergy - be sure to notify someone that understands your needs. Parking is available on site in a small lot, or on the adjacent street if the lot is full. This spot is BYOB so if you need some cold beer with your food be sure to bring it a long or stop at one of the many local liquor stores.

Go here, and eat soup dumplings then go home and go to sleep.

The Corner and It’s Delights - Bergenfield, NJ (Now Closed)

  I popped into the The Corner on a hot, muggy August day seeking cold refreshment and the  delicious juice I was handed absolutely delivered. They serve a bevy of beverages with flavors including mango, passionfruit, guava, strawberry, Lulo and blackberry.  I tried both the Lulo (tropical and sweet/sour) and strawberry. Both were fresh and and quickly helped me beat the heat that summer day. The Corner and it's Delights also offers an array of Columbian and American food options like empanadas, burgers, and salads - so stop in and try it out if you're in the neighborhood! Sophie's Cuban Cuisine - NYC (Various Locations)

Hell's Kitchen has no shortage of places to find a quick lunch, the trick is finding one with good food that breaks the typical mold of catering to the hot-table zombies. Luckily, Sophie's Cuban is here to break the monotony of the everyday routine with time-tested, delicious Cuban classics. The Grub: Sophie's is a great grab-and-go eatery obviously specializing in Cuban cuisine. Their offerings include some of the well-known classics like roast pork, fried chicken cutlets, baked chicken, and pork-chops with onions which are also their most popular dishes. I would also suggest giving their spicy grilled chicken and shredded beef stew a try, though quite honestly - you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu here. When you order, you are asked to pick an entree and 3 sides - which, in and of themselves could make a meal for most.
